Adaptations: axes and units converted from millimeters/Z-up to meters/Y-up; translated to rest at the stage; geometry simplified using meshoptimizer with 0.2% relative error limit per structure; normals quantized to signed 16-bit; packed into binary chunks; curated display system groupings and colors. The source contains 2,234 individual OBJ meshes; all remain represented. The combined hierarchy contains 3,432 named FMA concepts, which may reference multiple meshes. Original source identity is preserved in the manifest.

Source OBJ comments mention an older CC BY-SA 2.1 Japan license. The official current database license linked above supersedes that legacy text and explicitly permits redistribution and adaptation under CC BY 4.0.

BodyParts3D represents an adult male reference anatomy based on TARO MRI and anatomical illustration refinements. It is not a complete model of every possible human anatomical structure or variation. This interface is educational and is not a clinical tool.

## Historical assets (not included in the current release)

Earlier repository revisions included female reference anatomy: Kristen Browne and Heidi Schlehlein, Human Reference Atlas / HuBMAP, *3D Reference Organ Set for Female v1.5* (2023). CC BY 4.0. Geometry adapted for this viewer.

Adaptations: translated native meter/Y-up coordinates onto the stage, coincident vertices welded and source normals averaged, geometry simplified with a 0.2% per-structure relative error bound, and normals quantized. Colors and display systems are curated for this interface. All 888 source meshes are represented, with 1,073 source nodes available as selectable individual or compound concepts.

This is a reference assembly with whole-body surface and selected organs, including female reproductive anatomy. Its skeleton and muscle coverage is partial. It is not a complete model of every human structure or a single-person scan. Eight placenta/umbilical structures are classified under Pregnancy reference and hidden by default.

## Cogni Anatomy additions

### Human Reference Atlas (HuBMAP) 3D reference organs — CC BY 4.0

Female pelvis, uterus, ovaries, uterine tubes, urinary bladder and mammary glands (Visible Human female), heart chambers, valves and papillary muscles, and spinal cord segments (Visible Human male). Human Reference Atlas, HuBMAP Consortium, https://humanatlas.io, license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. Files: https://cdn.humanatlas.io/digital-objects/ref-organ/ (versions listed in `scripts/import-hra.mjs`).

Adaptations: fitted onto the BodyParts3D body by pelvis and heart anchors (uniform scale and shift), the female pelvis then centred on the midline and placed on the BodyParts3D pelvis box, the bladder scaled to 90% and moved behind the pubic symphysis, coincident vertices welded, geometry simplified (0.2% error bound), normals recomputed. Colours chosen for this interface.

### OpenEar — CC BY 4.0

Middle and inner ear (scala tympani and vestibuli, malleus, incus, stapes, tympanic membrane, external acoustic meatus, facial, chorda tympani and vestibulocochlear nerves, sigmoid sinus, internal carotid artery), specimen ZETA. Sieber D. et al., "The OpenEar library of 3D models of the human temporal bone based on computed tomography and micro-slicing", Scientific Data 6, 180297 (2019), https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2018.297. Data: https://zenodo.org/records/1342657, license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.

Adaptations: specimen axes rebuilt from anatomical landmarks, scaled from millimetres and placed in the right temporal bone of the BodyParts3D body, simplified, normals recomputed, colours chosen for this interface.

### Cardiac conduction system, female urethra and vagina — Cogni Anatomy, own models

Sinoatrial node, internodal pathways, atrioventricular node and bundle, bundle branches and Purkinje fibres were modelled for this atlas (`scripts/build-conduction.mjs`) as tubes laid on the HRA heart from anatomical landmarks; the female urethra and vaginal canal (`scripts/build-female.mjs`) as tubes from the HRA bladder neck and cervix to the perineum. Schematic, not a scan. Released with the code under the MIT licence of this repository.

### Z-Anatomy — CC BY-SA 4.0

Peripheral and cranial nerves, sympathetic trunk, the five lung lobes, and the head and neck muscles BodyParts3D lacks (facial expression, mastication, epicranius, soft palate, suprahyoid). Z-Anatomy — The libre 3D atlas of anatomy, Gauthier Kervyn, https://github.com/Z-Anatomy/Models-of-human-anatomy, license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/. Its own credit line: "BodyParts3D, © The Database Center for Life Science, CC BY-SA 2.1 Japan, mixed and modified by Z-anatomy.com". Cranial nerves adapted from "Cranial Nerves and Foramina", Sophia Lappe / University of Dundee CAHID, credited as CC BY 4.0 by Z-Anatomy. Non-commercial parts of the Z-Anatomy file (Dundee inner ear, kidney) and the cochlear nerve of unclear origin are not used.

Adaptations: exported from the Blender file (curves meshed with their own bevel), rotated to our axes, warped onto the BodyParts3D body by inverse-distance weighting of ~11,000 landmark pairs (bone surfaces, muscle and vessel centre lines), muscles moved out of BodyParts3D bone, simplified, normals recomputed. **Share-alike:** our adapted Z-Anatomy meshes and images derived from them are distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Application code retains its separate MIT license. Retain attribution, change notices and license links when redistributing these assets; do not impose additional restrictions on them.

BodyParts3D system classes corrected for 50 structures filed under the wrong system (`scripts/fix-systems.mjs`); names and geometry unchanged.

## License and source audit — 26 October 2026

Current inventory: 2,853 meshes — BodyParts3D 2,234; OpenEar 12; HRA 95; Z-Anatomy 381 (including 57 head/neck veins); Layered Human 121; Cogni 10. Every mesh and model file is mapped to its source and license in [models/sources.json](/models/sources.json).

### Updated Z-Anatomy head data

Head muscles, cranial nerves and 57 head/neck vein meshes use a uniform skull registration. Peripheral nerves elsewhere retain landmark-based registration. Adaptations also include evaluated curve-to-mesh conversion, coordinate conversion, simplification, name normalization and display colors. [Head-vein provenance](/models/zanatomy-head-veins.source.json) retains the original Blender object names. Both zanatomy-0.bin and zanatomy-head-veins.bin, including gzip equivalents, are adapted Z-Anatomy geometry under CC BY-SA 4.0. Preserve the earlier BodyParts3D CC BY-SA 2.1 Japan attribution requested by Z-Anatomy; the direct BodyParts3D 4.0 import separately uses the current CC BY 4.0 license.

The import includes peripheral/cranial nerves, selected head/neck muscles, five lung lobes and selected veins. Dundee inner-ear and kidney models with non-commercial licenses and the separate Cochlear nerve objects of uncertain origin are excluded. Two vestibulocochlear nerve trunks remain in the cranial/peripheral nerve group, distinct from the excluded cochlear nerve and inner-ear meshes; Dundee CAHID cranial-nerve credit is retained. Washington brain/white-matter geometry and Wikipedia definitions from Z-Anatomy are not imported. This checks import scope and upstream credit records, not a complete object-by-object chain-of-title review of the upstream project.

### Detailed heart — Layered Human / AnatomyExplorer, MIT

Ethan Prince, © 2026. Source: https://github.com/ethanprince4/AnatomyExplorer ; revision d5f522fa51d6919b6a3fe28a9e075b531320a92a ; file data/local_model_library/models/whole_heart/v4/model.npz. The upstream LICENSE explicitly covers its original procedural library models; THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.md identifies the whole heart as a procedural Blender model authored for that project. Its separately licensed Z-Anatomy dataset, Wikipedia text and unrelated library models are not imported here.

121 gross-anatomy parts were extracted; indices decoded; centimetres converted to metres; one uniform placement applied; geometry simplified and materials recolored. An authored teaching model, not a patient scan. The [full original MIT license and scope](/models/open-heart.LICENSE.txt) matches the pinned upstream file. [Heart provenance](/models/open-heart.source.json) records the source SHA-256.

### HRA organ-specific credits

All 11 imported organ-version metadata records state CC BY 4.0. Individual authors, versions, source links and citations are shipped in [models/hra.source.json](/models/hra.source.json). Supplied citations follow below; upstream metadata inconsistencies in the uterus version and right breast title are preserved in the provenance record.

### Preset images, code and dependencies

Thumbnails are rendered adaptations of the listed models, not screenshots copied from Anatomy 3D Atlas. [Per-preset attribution](/presets/attribution.json) records source combinations, credit lines and image licenses. Regenerate thumbnails and this inventory together when preset composition changes. Images derived from Z-Anatomy geometry are distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Standalone exported images must include or accompany the relevant author credits, source and license links, and change notices; the export workflow does not automatically imprint these onto the pixels.

Application: Human Atlas, © 2026 ashemag (original); © 2026 Cogni (modifications), MIT. [Application license](/licenses/application-MIT.txt). [Dependency notices](/licenses/dependencies.txt) retain available production dependency copyrights and full license texts. No web-font binaries are bundled; CSS font names use locally available fonts and system fallbacks.

No affiliation with or endorsement by source authors is implied. Commercial use is permitted by the listed CC BY, CC BY-SA and MIT licenses subject to their conditions. Non-commercial exceptions inside an upstream project do not gain a commercial license from its overall license notice.

### Dundee credit verification limit

The current creator page identifies Sophia Lappe / University of Dundee CAHID and credits legacy BodyParts3D CC BY-SA 2.1 Japan: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/cranial-nerves-and-foramina-a9358ee7a6dd4ea18a3622114405a4c7 . Z-Anatomy README explicitly identifies this component as CC BY 4.0. On 26 October 2026 the current Sketchfab API returned no license identifier, so direct independent confirmation of that component's earlier CC BY grant was unavailable. We retain the upstream Z-Anatomy attribution; this is a provenance limitation, not evidence that an earlier CC license has been revoked.
