About Cogni Anatomy

Cogni Anatomy is a free 3D atlas of the human body built from open anatomical datasets. This page lists every source with its license, explains how the models were prepared for the web and where their limits are.

Sources of the 3D data

BodyParts3D 4.0, Database Center for Life Science (CC BY 4.0): 2,234 meshes, the main body with bones, muscles, vessels, organs and brain.

Human Reference Atlas, HuBMAP (CC BY 4.0): 95 meshes, including female pelvic organs, breasts, heart chambers and spinal cord segments.

OpenEar, Sieber et al. 2019 (CC BY 4.0): 12 meshes of the middle and inner ear.

Z-Anatomy, Gauthier Kervyn (CC BY-SA 4.0): 381 meshes, peripheral nerves, facial and masticatory muscles and head and neck veins.

Layered Human / AnatomyExplorer, Ethan Prince (MIT): 121 meshes of the detailed teaching heart with valves, chordae and papillary muscles.

Cogni teaching geometry (MIT): 10 schematic meshes, the cardiac conduction system, female urethra and vagina.

How the models were prepared

Source files were converted to one coordinate system and aligned to the BodyParts3D skeleton; Z-Anatomy nerves and muscles were registered using 449 pairs of bony landmarks. The geometry was simplified for the browser from 6.7 million to 2.3 million triangles with a maximum relative error of 0.2%, packed into compressed chunks and recoloured by system. Structure names follow the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA).

What the models cannot show

The atlas shows one adult reference body, not individual variation. The female body option swaps in female pelvic organs and breasts from the Human Reference Atlas on the shared body; a female skin surface is not included. Some groups, such as ligaments and the lymphatic system, are still incomplete. Structure names in German, Spanish and Portuguese are machine translations with selected corrections and have not been reviewed by a medical translator.

Cogni Anatomy is an educational resource. It is not a diagnostic or surgical tool and does not give medical advice.

Reusing the images

Who makes it

Cogni Anatomy is made by Cogni (Cognifly Ltd), the team behind the Cogni flashcard app. The viewer is based on Human Atlas by ashemag (MIT). To report a mistake in a model or a name, write to [email protected].
