Male reproductive system in 3D

The male reproductive system consists of the testes, which produce sperm and testosterone, a duct system that stores and carries sperm, the seminal vesicles and prostate, which add most of the seminal fluid, and the penis. In this free 3D model you can follow the path of sperm from the testis to the urethra and see how the reproductive organs share the urethra with the urinary system.

Structure of the male reproductive organs

Sperm form in the seminiferous tubules of the testis and mature in the epididymis, which lies along its posterior border. The ductus deferens rises in the spermatic cord, passes through the inguinal canal, crosses the ureter behind the bladder and joins the duct of the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct.

The prostate surrounds the first part of the urethra just below the bladder. The urethra then passes through the pelvic floor and runs through the corpus spongiosum of the penis, which ends as the glans. The two corpora cavernosa lie side by side along the upper side of the penis.

What the 3D model shows

The urogenital view has 18 parts: the testes, epididymides, deferent ducts, seminal vesicles and prostate; the corpora cavernosa, corpus spongiosum and glans of the penis; and the urinary organs, the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra. You can see them in place inside a see-through skeleton or on their own, and turn them to any angle to follow the deferent duct from the scrotum to the back of the bladder.

How to study the male reproductive organs

Open the isolated view and follow sperm along their route: testis, epididymis, ductus deferens, past the seminal vesicle, through the prostate into the urethra. Turn to the lateral view to see where the deferent duct crosses over the ureter behind the bladder. Use the posterior view for the seminal vesicles and prostate, and see-through mode on the penis to find the urethra inside the corpus spongiosum. Then recite the route and the three erectile bodies from memory.

Questions

What is the path of sperm?

Seminiferous tubules of the testis, epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct, then the prostatic, membranous and spongy parts of the urethra.

Where is the prostate and what does it do?

The prostate lies just below the urinary bladder and surrounds the first part of the urethra. It contributes prostatic fluid to semen.

What are the erectile tissues of the penis?

Two corpora cavernosa on the dorsal side and one corpus spongiosum underneath, which contains the urethra and expands at the tip into the glans.
