The method

The spaced repetition app that plans your reviews for you

Cogni is a spaced repetition app built on FSRS, an open algorithm trained on hundreds of millions of real reviews. You rate each card Again, Hard, Medium or Easy; the app predicts when you would forget it and brings it back just before. No intervals to set, no sessions to plan: open, answer what is due, close.

Why re-reading fails and spacing works

Memory fades on a predictable curve, first described by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, and re-reading only flattens it for a day. Each successful recall right before the point of forgetting makes the memory stronger and the next safe interval longer: one day, then three, a week, three weeks, two months. You review only what is about to slip, and the rest stays learned.

What FSRS does that older schedulers cannot

FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) models the stability and difficulty of every card separately and predicts the probability that you still remember it on any given day. Compared with the classic SM-2 schedule most apps still use, it reaches the same retention with noticeably fewer reviews. Anki offers it as an option you switch on; in Cogni it is simply on, which is why people looking for an Anki alternative end up here.

What a session looks like

  • Cogni shows a card. You recall the answer, flip it, and rate it Again, Hard, Medium or Easy.
  • Each rating updates the card's stability and difficulty and sets the next due date.
  • Cards you know drift weeks into the future; cards you missed come back within the session and tomorrow.
  • The home screen shows what is due today, your streak and retention per deck.

Everything around the algorithm

  • A notes editor where any passage becomes cards, and an AI generator for PDFs, photos and topics
  • Import of Anki decks and a library of 50,000+ ready-made decks
  • Real-time sync between web, iPhone and Android, with offline study on mobile
  • Cards read aloud in 12 languages, reversed decks, cloze, images and audio

Made for the long haul

Vocabulary you want to keep, anatomy and pharmacology you will be tested on in a year, exam facts, definitions: spaced repetition was built for exactly this material, and Cogni is built so you never have to plan it.

Start in three steps

From zero to your first review

  1. 01

Add cards: write them, generate them from your notes, or import a deck

  2. 02

Study what is due and rate each card honestly

  3. 03

Come back tomorrow. The app already knows what to show you
